The Government of India through Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has made it mandatory for all Indian individuals to link PAN card with Aadhaar card before the new revised deadline of 30th June 2023.

If you fail to link Your Aadhaar card with your pan card, this will lead to deactivation of PAN Card by the Income Tax Department. Post deadline date ie from July 1st 2023, the unlinked PAN shall become inoperative. Pan Card holders will not be able to use their ten-digit unique alphanumeric number and all the financial transactions linked to their PAN card will be stopped or suspended.
    Please also note that Following categories are exempted from Aadhaar-PAN linking
  • NRIs
  • Not a citizen of India.
  • Age > 80 years as on date, so senior citizens above 80 year of age are exempt.
  • State of residence is ASSAM, MEGHALAYA or JAMMU & KASHMIR, so individuals residing in the above states are also exempt.
  • Check if your Aadhar card is link with your Pancard

    To verify if your aadhar card is linked with your pan card, visit https://eportal.incometax.gov.in/iec/foservices/#/pre-login/link-aadhaar-status
    You will have two boxes to enter your pan card and aadhar card, After entering your correct 10 digit alphanumeric pan card no and your 12 digit Numeric Aadhaar card number, you should click on View Link Aadhaar status.

    If your aadhar card is linked with your pancard you will get a message like this
    Your PAN XXXXXXXXXX is already linked to given Aadhaar XXXXXXXXXXXX

    & if its not linked, you will get message as
    Pan not linked with Aadhaar. Please click 'LINK AADHAAR" link to link your Aaadhar with Pan

    Last date and fee for linking PAN-Aadhaar

    All the individuals should note that As per CBDT circular F. No. 370142/14/22-TPL dated on 30th March 2022, every person who has been allotted a PAN as on 1st July 2017 and is eligible to obtain Aadhaar number is required to link PAN with AADHAAR on or before 30th June 2023. Taxpayers who failed to do so are liable to pay a fee of Rs. 500 till 30th June, 2022 and thereafter a fee of Rs. 1000 will be applicable before submission of PAN-AADHAAR linkage request.

    So as the 30th June 2022 is already gone, now the individual has to pay Rs 1000/- as fees for linking their Pan Card & Aadhaar Card.

    You should also note that the fee payment of Rs 1000/- should be done under - Minor head 500 - Other Receipts(500) and Major head 0021 [Income Tax (Other than Companies)] in single challan. After making the payment at Protean (NSDL) portal at https://www.protean-tinpan.com, please try to link your aadhar with your pan card only after 4-5 working days from the date of payment.

How you can Link your Aadhar card with your Pan card.

You can link your PAN-Aadhaar online or by sending an SMS to either 567678 or 56161 from your registered phone number.

You can also link the two identity cards i.e your Aadhaar Card and Pancard online by visiting the income tax portal and paying the late fee. To link PAN-Aadhaar online-
An Individual should keep the following Documents handy: 1) Aadhaar Card 2) PAN Card 3) Mobile number linked to aadhaar

Payment of fee

You will have to make an online payment of Rs 1000/- as Late Fee
Step 1: Go to the tax payment page and click Proceed below the text CHALLAN NO./ITNS 280 under the NON-TDS/TCS category.
Step 2- On the page - Challan No./ITNS 280
In Tax Applicable - Select the 2nd Option - (0021) Income Tax (Other than Companies)
In Type of Payment - Select the Last Option - (500) Other Receipts

Step 4- Select the Mode of Payment, Enter your Pan card, Select the Assesment Year as - 2023-24, Enter Your contact details in the respective fields & after entering all the details please Proceed to make the payment.
It is advisable to wait 4-5 working days before submitting the request to link PAN-Aadhaar as below

Linking of Aadhaar Number and PAN

After making the payment, To Link your Aadhaar Number and PAN either you can do it by sending a sms or do it online at https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/

METHOD :1
Send SMS to 567678 or 56161 from your registered mobile number in the following format:

UIDPAN<10 digit Pan Card no>

Example: UIDPAN 012340123401234 ARTUT2241M

METHOD :2
Online at https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/
Click on 3rd Link "Link Aadhaar" in the left side menu of Quick Links
You will have to enter your pan card and Aadhar Card and Click Validate Button
The Website will Validate your enter pan card and aadhar card details in few seconds.
After validating PAN and Aadhar, you will see a pop-up message “Your payment details are verified”.
Click the ‘Continue’ button.
Now you will have to your Name as per your Aadhaar Card, Mobile no and Check the required boxes.

Effects of De-activation of your Pan card.

    If your Pan card is De-activated, you will not be able to
  • File Income Tax Returns
  • Do Intraday trading.
  • Do Investments in Shares and Mutual Funds etc.
  • Open a Demat Account or Bank Account.
  • Invest in RBI Bonds.
  • Buy Insurance.
  • Buy Foreign Currency.
  • Purchase or Sell Immovable Property.
  • Buy Expensive Jewellery etc.
