Trading Volumes in Index options have been rising recent years. It now accounts more than 80% per cent of the total trading volume on the NSE. In 2009-10, it was just 50 per cent.

India‘s Leading National stock exchange ( NSE) has introduce weekly options contracts in Nifty index From Feb 11, 2019.

This will enable all the market participants an additional hedging tool to manage portfolio risk more effectively. The NSE has inform members that with reference to approval received from SEBI ( Security exchange Board Of India ) Weekly Options contracts in Nifty index shall be made available for trading in Future & Options segment with effect from Feb 11, 2019 said that Nifty Weekly contracts will expire on the every Thursday of the week. In case, Thursday is a trading holiday, the contracts will expire on the previous trading day.

"All contracts shall expire at the normal market closing time on the expiry day ( Normally on Thursday ) or such other time as decided by National stock exchange. A New weekly options contract will start from Friday.

In the NSE F&O segment, index options (Nifty & Bank Nifty) contribute around 75-80 per cent of market turnover. These new product may generate extra trading volumes in the exchange platform, So it will benefit Nse exchange as well as brokers too, as it will generate more income for them.

A futures contract is a forward contract, which is traded on an exchange, while an option contract gives a person the right but not the obligation to buy or sell something.

Weekly Options contracts on Nifty index shall be made available for trading in Future & Options segment with effect from 11 Feb, 2019.


What is an Option Contract in Nse?

An option is a contract between two parties wherein the buyer receives a privilege for which he pays a fee (premium) and the seller accepts an obligation for which he receives a fee.

Disadvantages of Weekly Option Contract

Apart from various benefits of this weekly option contract, there are some disadvantages of this contract for traders as well as Nse. Liquidity will be lower at the start and a trade may raise the risk of a spread between bids and ask prices. Traders should have proper understanding and perfect market view else premium erosion may hurt these small traders in a big way. Also If traders shift their trading from monthly to weekly contract, there will be no rise in overall volume in Nse F&o segment.
